Green Gifts For Christmas - Giving Green Christmas Gifts Doesn't Mean Hand Knits And Nut Roast!

Thinking about green gifts for Christmas might bring up a lot of unfashionable images of thick wool sweaters and Wellington boots, but the fact is there's a huge choice of interesting, inventive and fun green Christmas gifts if you give it a bit of thought.

Actually I like a nice thick sweater to keep me warm in the winter, I've been getting one from my mother for years and long may it continue. That's not really the point I'm trying to make here though. Not only are there plenty of interesting choices, but it must also depend on what you consider a green Christmas gift anyway.

Christmas Gift

You could say anything to do with the outdoors qualifies. If you inspire someone to grow their own vegetables by giving them seed and trowel, isn't that a green gift? If you give a child a bicycle so they get exercise rather than sitting in front of the TV, I would say that qualifies. Actually, if you give an adult a bicycle so they don't take the car everywhere, that certainly qualifies!

But in case you think I'm being a bit flippant here, let's look at a few alternatives across different price ranges. I saw a clock the other day that was powered not by batteries or electricity but by water. The clock itself could be recycled at the end of its useful life. Since Trevor Bayliss brought us the wind-up radio a few years ago - intended for remote places in the world where there was no electricity - we now have numerous wind up torches, lanterns, battery chargers, radios and combinations of those things. There are solar-powered chargers for your phone, iPod, iPad or other device - that's a green gift for Christmas that works hand-in-hand with modern technology.

For the kids there are toys made from recycled or recyclable materials. What about a worm farm? Then there are lots of things to attract wildlife into your garden or to encourage an interest in plants and animals - and they certainly aren't dull, boring, or the sort of thing that's played with until the batteries run out and then forgotten.

For grown-ups there are no end of Fair Trade food products. There are candles, soaps and scents. There are subscriptions to events or wildlife organizations that people are into (or you think they ought to get into). There's solar garden lighting and power for water features. Then there are slightly off-beat things like newspaper presses - a cheap and simple gadget that compresses old newspapers into 'bricks" that burn much better and much longer than the paper would on its own. The list goes on...

If you're looking for green gifts for Christmas you are spoiled for choice. There's something for all ages and tastes and these days, thanks to the internet, they aren't even difficult to find. Have a great Christmas, and don't forget to recycle the packaging after!

Christmas - Unique Traditions in Bavaria, Belgium, Bulgaria and Brazil!

Christmas is celebrated with unique and unusual traditions, foods and customs in many countries. Here are some fascinating insights and traditions shared from Bavaria, Belgium, Bulgaria and Brazil.

Bavaria - Star Singers - As part of the Christmas celebrations in Bavaria, children dress up as The Three Kings and carry an imitation star on a pole. From New Year's day to January 6th children travel from house to house and sing religious songs. The children are referred to as "Star Singers". Children are rewarded with money or sweets. If given sweets they may eat them. If given money it is given to a Catholic church or to a charity. As the children depart they put a chalk mark "C.M.B" on houses they have visited. This is sometimes taken as a reference to The Three Kings (Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar) while others believe it may originally have represented the words "Christus mansionem benedicat" meaning "Christ bless this house".

Christmas Eve

Belgium - Belgium enjoys two Santa Claus figures. There is St. Nicholas (who visits those who speak the Waloon language) and Pere Noel (who visits those who speak French) and is accompanied by his companion Pere Fouettard. The first visit is on 4th December when he checks to see if children have been good or bad. He returns on December 6th (the feast of St Nicholas) with presents (usually candy or toys) for the good children and twigs left inside shoes or in a small basket left inside the doorway for the bad children. A tradition continues in small villages where three local men are chosen to portray "The Three Kings". They move from house to house singing carols on January 6th. The Three Kings are joyously welcomed and rewarded with gifts of food or small treats. Families enjoy a Christmas Eve meal of Aarappel Kroketjes consisting of fried potato croquettes and Speculoos, cookies made with cinnamon, ginger and cloves.

Brazil - It is very hot in Brazil at Christmas and so their Santa type character called Papai Noel (Father Noel) is the gift bringer who wears light red silks. According to legend he lives in Greenland. It is believed this character was imported from and developed into their own from North America in the 50's and became popular because of the commercial appeal in the late 60's and 70's. A Christmas December tradition for family and friends to share is called "Secret Friend" (amigo secreto). Participants at the beginning of December write their name on a piece of paper. Each participant takes a paper (but does not reveal the name of the person on it). Over the month there is communication between picked partners who use fake names "apelidos" during correspondence for added fun. Then at Christmas, family and friends gather to reveal their secret friends and exchange a present or gift between chosen secret friends. Christmas dinner includes turkey, ham, colored rice with lots of fresh vegetable and fruit dishes. The most popular song in Brazil associated with Christmas is "Noite Feliz" (Silent Night).
.
Bulgaria - A main tradition is "sooroovachka" whereby children with a specially prepared handmade patting stick, pat family, friends and visitors Christmas Eve whilst saying a wish for health, wealth and happiness to the one patted. Bulgarian's give the child money at the end of the patting which they believe is their way of buying success for the coming year. Another tradition is where homemade bread has a coin added before baking. When Christmas dinner begins the oldest person breaks the bread and gives a piece to everyone. The one who gets the coin is believed to be bestowed with wealth and prosperity in the new year.

The main celebration meal is held Christmas Eve at the home of the oldest grandparent. Hey is placed under the dinner table in respect of and to remind the family of the manger. The Christmas Eve dinner table which consists of 7-11 dishes, is not cleared until the next morning. This is a tradition which they believe will ensure there will be plenty of food for the coming year!

A Black, White, and Silver New Year's Eve Wedding

A Black, White, and Silver New Year's Eve Wedding

New Year's Eve is definitely the most glamorous night of the whole year to have a wedding. Black, white, and silver is a chic color palette that will bring out the stylish flair of the holiday. Learn how to plan an unforgettable New Year's Eve wedding using a black, white, and silver color scheme.

It almost goes without saying that a New Year's Eve wedding should be black tie. Classic black tie always looks the most elegant; while rental shops may suggest colorful vests for the groom and groomsmen, a black cummberbund is more dashing and timeless. Silver dresses will be the clear choice for the bridesmaids. If they are comfortable in slender silhouettes, slinky silk sheaths would be ideal. Choose ones with a gathered bustline and wide straps, like something from the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1930s. Big sparkly crystal jewelry will complete their look perfectly. If you want to up the drama factor, your bridesmaids could wear little maribou stoles over their dresses for the ceremony.

Christmas Eve

The bride at a New Year's Eve wedding needs a really striking gown. An incredible look is a fluid sheath gown covered from head to toe in tiny crystals or sequins. This has been a very hot look on the red carpet this year, and looks simply unbelievable when you move. Such a glam gown calls for dramatic crystal bridal jewelry, and plenty of it. If you wish to define the waist, a black sash with a jeweled brooch would be great with the black, white, and silver theme. Because the silhouette of a sheath is so simple, you can get away with really bold crystal bridal jewelry.

Then there are the flowers! Accent white flowers with silvery elements to incorporate the color scheme into the bouquet. Silvery dusty miller or lamb's ear leaves are wonderful natural accents to ruffly white parrot tulips or lovely white camellias. Another idea is to use silver metal leaves or tiny metallic silver balls to mix into the white blossoms. Being New Year's Eve, you could even get away with glittery silver curly branches mixed into the bouquets or centerpieces. Tie the bouquets with black velvet ribbons to complete the effect. The centerpieces will be very striking arranged in black vases. Either use fluted footed black vases for a vintage flair, or tall sleek rectangular black vessels for a sleek modern look.

To bring your black, white, and silver color scheme to life at your New Year's Eve wedding, special table linens are a must. I personally do not care for black table linens (they never feel clean to me), but silver would look amazing. Shimmery silver organza toppers can be used over standard white tablecloths, or if budget permits, rent silver silk dupioni linens with a chic quilted stitching (like a Chanel handbag). Since the centerpieces will be primarily black and white, the whole elegant color theme will come together beautifully.

Every wedding needs a big finish, and for New Year's Eve, fireworks would be spectacular. Treat your guests to a grand finale as the clock strikes midnight. You can welcome in the New Year and your new married life at the same time - what a perfect way to start the year!

Family Traditions - Why, and Some Holiday Ideas

Maybe you remember a special tradition your mother did before Christmas, or how you always had a special family tradition that is a part of your growing up memories. Some families starting out may have stopped some traditions that did not care for, and are looking for new traditions that they can use to build their own special family memories.

Whatever your situation, traditions can and should be a fun thing for your family, creating memories that last, and instilling good values. One researcher is quoted on the Ohio State University website that, "Families that have the strongest ties have the most traditions or rituals in their life". So, pick traditions that you like, and that your children will just think are the coolest things ever.

Christmas Day

Tradition can be defined as:

1. The transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way.

2. A long-established custom or belief that has been passed on in this way.

Customs can be defined as your family's rituals or practices for daily or weekly routines, such as a pizza night, what you do on certain days, or your daily routine.

Traditions do not have to be expensive, or extravagant. I am reminded of hearing Tom Hanks say what he did for Christmas: "We come downstairs in our pajamas, and open presents". This is not an exact quote, but conveys that he does what many others do, on the same day.

Seasonal family traditions include summer vacations and holidays, anniversaries, birthdays. Following are some ideas that can help create awesome family memories:

Easter:

1. find a sunrise service being held at a church, and attend. (This can be a memorable experience even for non-earlybirds!)

2. Make quiche.

Memorial day-

1. Find a place to escape to and kiss a lot, for you married people.

2. Family BBQ.

3. Go for a hike.

Fourth of July

1. Go to a certain campground, or to a big Fourth of July celebration.

2. Watch Independence Day, or the Patriot.

3. Have your favorite berry pie or dessert.

Labor day - spend it at the beach! But of course not everyone can do this, so come up with your own getaway place; for practicality keep it under a 2 hour drive.

Summer time family get togethers - how about a yearly get together for extended family -- potlucks, or bbq's at a park or family member's home.

Thanksgiving

1. Have everyone say what they are thankful for, at the dinner table.

2. Watch Squanto, or read a Thanksgiving story.

3. Go shopping the next day!

Christmas

1. A Christmas family tradition idea that I grew up with is Christmas calendar that held special activities for each day of the month; it had a place for a scroll of paper that was to be opened each day. This was handmade by my mom, and it was great fun seeing what special activity the evening held for us. You could modify it for the 12 days of Christmas.

2. Have a berry cobbler for breakfast. Check out my website below for a great place to store your favorite family recipes.

3. Watch the Christmas Carol.

4. Read the Christmas Story.

5. Go to pick out your own Christmas tree, and/or put it up on Dec. 1st.

6. Go to a Christmas musical.

7. Make your own special treats to give away as presents.

Hopefully I have given you some fresh ideas that will give you some great family memories.

What Guys Really Want For Christmas!

What Guys Really Want For Christmas!

Okay, ladies: listen up! I am here to tell you what men want for Christmas. It isn't cologne and it isn't some awful looking tie. Please! It could be NFL playoff tickets, but we know that prices for them are through the roof. Instead, us guys want stuff that is both useful and practical something we won't pretend to like and hide away in our closets, but stuff that we will use all the time. I've made a list to make it easy on you as I know how hard it can be for us guys to communicate to our gals.

1. NFL Tickets!!! No, wait! You can go to eBay and get "discounted" tickets for a mid-January meeting between the Giants and some other team for a lot less than what you'll pay through a neighborhood scalper. How many fans do you think will put up with ten degree Meadowlands cold on a January day to see the Giants. Oh, yeah, I forgot: plenty. Tickets are likely to go for one or two thousand a piece!

Christmas Day

2. Hockey Time. More down to earth in price are NHL hockey tickets. Heck, the toothless boys sat out the season last year and everyone is chomping at the bit to see them play. With no strike on the horizon, your guy is likely to be able to see a complete game. All that bloodletting and head bashing for a song! For grins, get him Stanley Cup tickets. Nothing beats watching a hockey game in June when it is 93 degrees outside!

3. To The Islands! No, not Staten Island and certainly not Long Island. A January or February trip to a warmer climate will be both reasonably priced and fun. Just don't pick a place that was trashed by one of the 23 tropical systems that attacked the Caribbean, the Americas and the Gulf Coast this year. No telling what amenities are in place! One rule: have the grandparents come to your house to watch the kid. Junior getting the flu is no reason for you not to go! [Blush!]

4. Get Tools. Yes, if your man enjoys tinkering around the house, get him an electric saw, a power drill, or anything else that he can use to fix that darn, lose railing in the family room! [wink, wink] If you aren't sure what to get him, a gift certificate will do. Sounds tacky? Well, it certainly beats a "thanks, dear" when he opens up his gift and finds a water pump inside!

5. Stuff For His Truck. What a guy really wants is something for his truck. Nah, let him get his own gun rack and ammo; I'm talking about a cold air intake or a performance chip. Something that brings power to the ole pick up! What am I saying? Get him something that he can really use that will bring a smile to his face. Performance exhaust systems, Altezza lights, roof rails, side window vents, fog lights, truck liners, step rails, brake dust shields, hitches, alloy wheels, a set of new tires, head light covers, hood protectors, and an engine pulley are some of the items that are sure to be hot this Christmas. He'll be happy and he will think you know something about his truck - hey, you are the one who wants him to talk with you, right?

Still not sure? Then ask. Chances are I already mentioned something that he wants. If you are low on cash a set of new truck mats will suffice, but please let him pick the color.

Some how Summer Rose floor mats just don't match his Silverado's interior!

Labor day was originally supposed to celebrate the ending of summer and the beginning of fall. Now, Labor Day is the last day before summer ends and school starts back in session. This holiday is also a time for families to get together, celebrate, and enjoy their time with each other.

Along with many holidays, the right food is a must for a great occasion and Labor Day isn't any different. The food that people usually associate with Labor Day is barbeque, but there are many other foods that you can prepare to make your holiday great. Barbeque can be a great entrée for your occasion because of how easy it is to make. There are also many different ways that you can marinate your barbeque to turn out with different flavors to the meat. You could use lemon pepper and garlic, or some citrus fruits to add a sweeter flavor to your meat. There are also many types of meats that you can use to barbeque if you have different palates in your family. Some members of your family might like to have different types of food depending on what they normally feel is barbeque. Meats such as beef, chicken, steak, and sausage can be used when you are grilling out with your family.

Christmas Day

Another food that is usually associated with barbeque is potato salad. Although this sounds like an insignificant type of food, most people will associate this type of food with a barbeque. Potato salad can be mixed up and changed depending on what type of flavors you are looking for. Many people use different types of seasonings to flavor their potato salad in different ways. Some people use seasonings such as relish and red pepper to add a different kind of kick to your potato salad.

Cobblers also tend to be a summer time favorite for those looking for a dessert for their barbeque. There are many different flavors that you could add to your barbeque using different types of fruits and fillings. Peach cobbler tends to be a popular flavor for those who live near places where peaches are grown. There are also other flavors such as cherry and apple that will make a great ending to your Labor Day barbeque.

Top Christmas Gifts For Her This Year

There are thousands of options to choose from when it comes to buying something special for the lady in your life. You want to make the Christmas gift to her memorable to let her know how much you care about her.

So, how does one go about choosing a perfect gift for the woman of his life? Here are a few gifts that have been known to delight a woman time and time again over the years.

Christmas Card

• Cell phone - Women usually love their cell phone. It is a big part of their life and they would love to have a phone that they can be proud of. Depending on her tastes, you can choose from diverse array of cell phones. She must have mentioned a particular cell phone in some conversation or other. You could surprise her with that gift and she will absolutely love you for it. Since it is also something that she will use every day, it will constantly remind her of your affection for her.

• Gift card - You can now purchase gift cards from major companies such as Discover or Visa. These cards can be used anywhere a credit card can be used. A gift card is one of the safer options when it comes to gifts. If you are clueless about what she might like for Christmas, this might be a safe bet.

• Electronic appliances - If your woman is a home maker, you can consider buying her a gift that will make her every day chores easier. This is also a gift that she would love because she will understand that you care about her. A spanking new washing machine or top of the line kitchen appliances are guaranteed to delight her.

• A weekend getaway - This is more of an unconventional gift but it can make her feel very happy as it will allow her to relax and de stress. Some women will appreciate this sort of a gift much more than a material gift as it is more thoughtful on your part. You could maybe pay in advance for a health spa where she will be pampered and made to feel like a queen. Women will love that.

• Special DVD packages - Every woman has a movie that they absolutely adore and there is a very good chance that you are aware of it. Go out and get a special DVD package on the movie that will usually include some extras or bonus features. This is a good choice if you are looking for something easily affordable.

• Think one up yourself - Although there are many generic gifts to choose from as mentioned above, only you know best about what your woman will really like. Sit down and think hard about what might make her feel very happy. There will always be something that will come up as an awesome gift idea.

Whatever gift you choose, make sure that you present it properly. Spend lavishly on a gift wrapping that will make the gift even more memorable. Also, find a perfect situation to give her the gift as the moment counts as well.

Christmas Shopping on a Budget

Christmas Shopping on a Budget

I know, it is only September, but if you have a limited budget you have to start thinking about Christmas now. Christmas is the one time of year that we all try to cram a large amount of spending money with small paychecks. This is impossibility; in the end something has to give.

You have several options available to you, which can help eliminate this problem.

Christmas Eve

· Start a savings account in January that is intended for use at Christmas
· During the year shop at stores that have a layaway plan.
· Start buying Christmas gifts way before December 25th.

Years ago, the banks would open a Christmas savings account for you. I don't know if they still hold this custom or not. I was not one of those smart people who would open a Christmas saving account. If this is something you don't have any difficulty doing, then I would look into one. If nothing else, open a regular saving account and leave a small balance in there so you will have it to use the next year. If you can figure out about how much money you spend at Christmas, then you might be able to gauge how much money should go into the account every month.

If you are better a paying on layaways, then find stores that still have a layaway plan, so that you can put some of the gifts in layaway and pay on them a little at a time. I am sure there are others, but the only one I know about is K-Mart, unless it is jewelry and then you can go to Wal-Mart for their jewelry layaway. I am sure other stores have them, but I just haven't looked for them.

The method that works best for me is to start early. I do a lot of my Christmas shopping online, but I will buy some of it early. I also make some of my Christmas gifts, so then I really start early because the closer it gets to Christmas time the shorter the amount of time I have on making the gifts. Starting your Christmas shopping early is the key to all of the methods with the exception of the savings account.

By starting your Christmas shopping early, you don't have to come up with all the money you would like to spend at one time. Many of us like and enjoy going just a little overboard at Christmas time. It is such a joy to see the smiles on their faces when you have given that loved one the perfect gift.

Not many of us have the ,000s we would like to spend at Christmas coming to us in November and December every year. This is the reason so many people end up maxing out their credit cards to pay for the gifts at Christmas time. I know many of you have stated that it takes almost an entire year to pay off last Christmas and then you start the cycle all over again.

So this year why don't you turn over a new leaf. You can still buy almost all the gifts you want to give this year; there are usually at least one or two gifts that get missed every year. This year commit to shopping smarter instead of harder.

By that I mean, don't wait until the Christmas rush or the Friday after Thanksgiving to start your Christmas shopping. Buy a few things in September and do the same in October, etc. I think you get the idea. Doing your Christmas shopping like this doesn't mean you won't find things on sale. Yes, you will! What you will cut down on some of the stress of the holiday season. You won't have to rush around to get your last minute shopping done the day before you go to families for Christmas, or the day before Christmas Eve.

You may be like my husband. If I find a gift for someone and I want his opinion on it, it is difficult for him to think about Christmas in October. I just explained to him I had to start early. I have to think about it and get it in advance. I know shopping online has made things so easy for me. I don't have to worry about mailing the items. I just have them shipped straight to their house. That way I have eliminated the wrapping, and the standing in line at the post office to mail them.

Using one of these methods to get your Christmas shopping done, you won't be trying to cram so much into such a short amount of time. Also, with any luck you won't have to use your credit cards so much, which will give you, some breathing room in case an emergency comes up. Happy Shopping!

Christmas Stocking Stuffers - Ideas For Everyone

Christmas Stocking Stuffers - Ideas For Everyone

While everyone gets excited about the big gifts that are under the tree at Christmas, Christmas stocking stuffers can also be a source of great excitement. The trick is to make sure that you fill the stockings with items that are just as exciting as what is under the tree.

Children and adults alike can be delighted by what they find in their stockings on Christmas morning. Although some families simply fill Christmas stockings with cheap candy, fruit or token gifts, it can be a lot of fun to start a new family tradition of filling the Christmas stockings with special, more expensive (or more unique) gifts.

Christmas Card

Here are a few ideas for memorable Christmas stocking stuffers:

Toys: when it comes to little ones you can't go wrong with toys. There are such a wide variety to choose from that you'll have no trouble finding something for a child of all ages.

Jewelry: it comes as no surprise that jewelry is one of the favorite Christmas stocking stuffers around. Jewelry is small and can also be quite expensive; however, this does not have to be the case. If you are filling the stocking of a child, you can simply put costume or seasonal jewelry in the stocking. Children can even make jewelry for mom and use that as a stocking stuffer. If you want to make the gift truly the talk of the day and something that will be bragged about for weeks to come, then an expensive piece of jewelry might be the best option.

Photographs: small framed photos can be a very thoughtful stocking stuffer. You can even make the gift even more special by having children decorate the picture frame. Another idea for photographs would be to purchase small photo frames with magnets on the back. These make cute refrigerator magnets and will bring a smile to the recipient's face each time he or she looks at them.

Candy: you can go with the traditional inexpensive candy for the stocking, but for a special treat purchase the expensive chocolates that the recipient would never purchase any other time. This makes a decadent gift that will certainly be enjoyed (and will disappear quickly).

Coffee and tea: if you have a coffee or tea lover to buy for, fill up the stocking with flavored teas and coffees. You can also find small sizes of flavored creamer, as well.

Gift cards: purchase a gift card for the recipient's favorite store or restaurant. Use a small box or tin to wrap it in. If you're not sure which store or restaurant to purchase a gift card from, you can always purchase a prepaid Visa gift card. These prepaid cards are accepted anywhere you can use a debit Visa (even online). A prepaid Visa gift card is also a great idea as a Christmas stocking stuffer for a college student.

No matter whether you decide to go with an expensive gift or the traditional less-expensive gifts as Christmas stocking stuffers, the most important part is that you put a great deal of thought and care into whatever you decide to give. Your thoughtfulness will shine through and make a big impression on whoever receives your special stocking stuffer.

Make Your Own Christmas Cards

Are you tired of sending the same old Christmas cards depicting boring baubles and dreary bells year in and year out? Have you ever thought that you could design better Christmas cards yourself? Why not have a go this year?

The best time to begin collecting material for making Christmas cards is during the previous year's yuletide season. Collect as many seasonal clippings, ribbons, bows and small decorations as possible from magazines, wrapping paper, gift tags, Christmas cards, advent calendars...the list is endless - you won't have to look far for inspiration during the Christmas period.

Christmas Card

Once you have amassed all of your material, store it in a special craft chest. You may wish to divide your material into different themes and put it into individual drawers in your craft chest.

You can then decide when to begin making cards for next Christmas. This will depend on how much time you have throughout the year and how many cards you wish to make - do you want to make a card for everyone on your Christmas card list or just a few for close friends and family?

Before starting to make the cards, you will need to buy either some card for cutting, folding and making your own card blanks or some ready-made card blanks with envelopes - this is the quickest and easiest way. Look in the crafts-paper crafts-card making section of eBay for good value packs of card blanks and matching envelopes or try your local craft store.

White or cream is a good background color as it enables you to use a variety of colors on top but you don't have to restrict yourself to this color, you can be as creative as you like. Red and green also make good background colors for Christmas cards.

You may also wish to buy peel-offs, which are stickers with such greetings as 'Happy Christmas,' 'Season's Greetings,' etc. They are useful for giving your cards the finishing touch but are not essential, as you could write a greeting using a silver gel pen, for example, or not include a greeting on the front of the card at all.

Sticky pads are another useful addition to your Christmas card craft making kit. These small foam pads with adhesive on both sides give certain images a slightly raised effect, allowing them to stand out from card slightly. They are excellent for giving more prominence to centerpieces.

You could also buy other materials like handmade or mulberry paper but these are not necessary if you have amassed a lot of your own Christmas material.

Alternatively, if you do not have any materials for making the cards, you could buy a Christmas card making kit. This will include several card blanks as well as many bits and pieces that you can use to design and make cards. It may even have suggested designs and instructions, which are great if you lack a little inspiration.

As far as tools are concerned, the only essential tools are a pair of scissors, a ruler and some glue. A glue pen is very useful as it allows you to apply glue very finely to small decorations.

Now the fun begins...just sit down and let you imagination run wild. Try out different designs on the cards without sticking them down. If one design doesn't work, discard it and begin again but don't be too judgmental - the idea is to have fun. Some designs will be better than others but you won't develop your own style if you don't give your creativity full rein.

As a finishing touch, you could add a little sticker on the back saying 'handmade by...' These stickers are available to buy or you could print them yourself from your computer. If people like your cards, you could have orders coming in for next year's cards and before you know it, you will have set up your own card making business. You could even sell your surplus cards to friends, at local groups and fairs or even on the Internet. eBay is a good place to start selling hand-crafted items online.

If you do begin selling your cards, bear in mind that you can only sell your original designs. If you have copied someone else's design either from a book, magazine, website or another source, you cannot sell it as it would be a violation of copyright, unless it is explicitly stated that it is a copyright-free design.

So, sit down, relax and enjoy a creative pursuit in the run-up to Christmas. The rewards could be greater than you expect.

Christmas Decorations Using Candle Wax - A Great Way of Decorating Illuminations

Christmas is a special occasion for everyone. Decoration is an integral part of it. Among all types of decorations, lighting decorations occupy a special place. Since candle wax lighting is a great way of decorating the Christmas trees, candle manufacturers come up with multiple types of candle lights.

One of the essential parts of the Christmas decorations is lighting. Multiple types of lighting decorations are available in the market. Each of them has its own unique features that can make Christmas decorating experiences exotic. However, when it comes to combining classic with the contemporary, there can be no comparison of candle wax lighting.

Christmas Eve

Feeling of lighting decorations in Christmas is not only exotic, but is also irrepressible. Gorgeous home as well as outdoor décor is what makes Christmas a special occasion to celebrate. It is also the time when candle manufactures have a great time commercially. Candles are used for most types of decorations including their places on the birthday cakes. Yet none other occasion can match the grandeur of the Christmas Eve. A tree that is trimmed in traditional red and green is a great way of decorating the occasion.

Change is an integral feature of human life and Christmas celebration is no exception to that. Every holiday season has its own color, cuts as well as pattern changes. Christmas 2009 was different from Christmas 2008 and similarly, Christmas 2010 will still be different from Christmas 2009. It is natural therefore the candle manufacturers are coming up with new and innovative ideas from time to time. Premier among those ideas is the way the Christmas tree would be decorated.

It does not mean that the trend has completely broken away from the traditional. Manufacturers across the country are opting for voluminous balls as well as imaginatively designed items like animals, angels as well as fairytale figures that can live up the occasion pretty well. Particularly popular among the specimens are artificial snow on the pine branches that are most likely to replace the traditional Lametta and the tinsels that marked the Christmas in previous years.

Another trend that is most likely to capture the market and influence the candle manufacturers in the market is the natural style as well as use of natural materials. Such materials include bleached wood, glass and cotton that give authentic looks to the decorative items manufactured by them. Combination of classic and contemporary can be achieved by combining old and cherished pieces with new purchases. Such manufacturing can create recycling especially when someone uses collectibles with shiny surface.

Candle manufacturers seem to have taken a great deal of interest in the colorful varieties of materials. Such colors could be anything from red, grey, white, orange, lemon, gold, or other vibrant colors. Even trendier among the colors are blue and brown respectively. Some of the most popular candles in the market are the pillar candles that combine wide variety of colors, designs and fragrances.

Warm candle lights are always a symbol of high levels of romanticism. Predominantly simple in make and style, candle wax can be richly colored and printed and can be used amongst other home accessories.

Christmas - Believing In Miracles

Christmas - Believing In Miracles

For the most part, people all over the world, Christians and non Christians, have pretty much stopped believing in miracles. There is too much pain and suffering going around to believe that someday the fighting and killing will stop. That would certainly be a miracle in itself, let alone on Christmas. But if you look hard enough, even at our own terrible history, you'll see that there have been quite a few Christmas miracles. If you need some examples, keep reading.

A gentleman was scheduled to do the Christmas sermon for his church because the minister was on vacation that week. He had everything prepared. He went over his sermon with the minister the week before to get it approved and made all last minute corrections before he gave it. Then, that morning, he woke up, deathly ill. He couldn't speak, his throat was so sore from the terrible cold he had. There was no way he was going to make it to church. The sermon wasn't about to come off.

Christmas Card

And then, the miracle happened. The man went into his study, got on his hands and knees and prayed to God to somehow give him the strength to make it to church and deliver the sermon. To make a long story short, within an hour, his throat cleared up enough to be able to deliver that sermon. Yes, he needed a glass of water at the pulpit and he didn't sound as good as he could, but he did give that sermon. A Christmas miracle had indeed come his way.

But one of the greatest miracles of Christmas came on December 25, 1914. It was during the first world war. It was out in the trenches where the British army was worn and battered. They simply didn't want to fight that day. They thought, wouldn't it be something if we could get the German army, at the other end of the battlefield, in their own trenches, to agree to a cease fire, just for that day. Well, they put out the word. At first the Germans thought it was a trick. But it was no trick. The British soldiers laid down their rifles. Eventually the German soldiers did the same. The German generals were so worried about this that they ordered their men to attack, but they didn't. For one day during the war in 1914, the fighting had stopped.

There are those who will claim that these things were no miracles. Certainly in comparison to turning stones into bread and water into wine and raising men from the dead, these do indeed fall far from what we would call a modern day miracle. But in a world where we can't turn on the news without hearing about killings and muggings and war breaking out somewhere, it's comforting to know that during one of the bloodiest wars in the history of our planet, two sides were able to put down their weapons for just one day and stop the fighting.

It may not be a miracle. But it will certainly never be forgotten.

Christmas in Jamaica

Christmas in Jamaica

Christmas, no matter how it is celebrated, brings together family and friends to celebrate Christ's birth. Being predominantly Christian, Jamaica celebrates Christ's birth and lends its own distinct flavor to Christmas.

Traditional Christmas carols are also sung in the tropical islands in the same way these are sung in almost all countries. Yet to give it a Jamaican flair, a lot of the popular Christmas carols are re-recorded in reggae rhythm. Reggae versions of popular Christmas carols are now acquiring popularity the world over.

Christmas Eve

Perhaps the most important sign that marks the Christmas season in Jamaica would be the food. Bakers and homemakers start baking Christmas fruit cakes using mixed fruits marinated in wine months in advance, and rum made from locally grown sugar cane. Sorrel, Jamaica's Christmas drink, is also prepared using sorrel sepal, cinnamon, cloves, sugar, orange peel, and white rum. Served over ice, sorrel is served all over Jamaica during the Christmas season. Celebrating Christmas day in Jamaica is a whole-day feast starting with ackee, salted fish, breadfruit, fried and boiled bananas, fresh fruit juice, and tea. Because of the hearty breakfast which can go on until before lunch, Christmas dinners are served in the early afternoon. Roasted chicken or duck, stewed ox tail, goat curry, ham, rice, and peas are the usual offerings.

Johnkano celebrations, a pagan ritual introduced by African slaves that highlight masked dancers and musicians are also celebrated in some of Jamaica's rural areas. A lot of houses are painted, and homeowners hang new curtains and western Christmas decorations such as wreaths, tinsel, and Christmas lights. Santa Claus, a western Christmas concept, also adorns houses and shop windows. This is despite the fact that Jamaican houses do not have chimneys where Santa usually descends! In some rural communities, Santa Claus delivers his gifts riding a cart pulled by donkeys.

The Best Christmas Shopping Day

The Best Christmas Shopping Day

Big shopping days are the Friday after Thanksgiving, the day after Christmas, and New Years Day.

New Years Day is the day that women get even with their husbands for watching a zillion football games. They spend and spend and spend.

Christmas Day

The problem with all of these days and all the days between Thanksgiving and Christmas is that there are a zillion customers in the stores. To get there they cram the streets with their cars. The clerks are working themselves to death. When they get home at night they say, "Oh, my feet! My feet!"

The best day to do Christmas shopping is the day that the stores are full of new Christmas merchandize that has not been picked over.

There is a plethora of clerks a smiling.

The clerks joke with you, help you find the right set of earrings for each of your twenty-three granddaughters, binoculars for your nine grandsons, a stuffed lion for your great granddaughter, books for your kids and their spouses, and then the clerks say, "Have a nice Thanksgiving! Can we help you to the car?"

Now you have guessed the day, haven't you?

How many said, "Christmas Eve just before the stores close when the stores panic if they have too much leftover merchandise. They cut their prices and you buy, buy, buy!

If you are not poor, you are wrong. Now days, the stores have to cut their prices much earlier to compete with Target® and Wal-mart®.

The best day to shop is the day before Thanksgiving.

Stay-at-home moms are all baking pies.

Working moms are heading straight for the grocery store at noon and after work.

Nobody goes shopping that day but my wife and I and a few little old ladies who have "caught on."

We went shopping this morning and were home by 3:30 p.m. That was after I had the salmon at the Sizzler® and my wife her usual salad bar. I had a salad bar too.

When we got to the Sizzler®, I was starved from shopping for our five children, their spouses, our 32 grandchildren, including two new spouses, and our great grandchild that still says, "Goo, Goo!" (Our triplets still say, "Goo, Goo!" too.)

I started with a bowl of clam chowder, then salad, then the salmon, then the ice cream. Yum! Yum!

Back in our home town exhausted by the metropolis of Twin Falls with its thousands of people, I laid down on the bed to get the kink out of my back that I always get when shopping.

When I woke up, I had missed Jeopardy®.

That's when I decided that I had to get the presents under-wrapped (that is in the wrapping under the pretty stuff. I made up the word. Go ahead and use it).

I needed to write the name of the child, grandchild, or great grandchild on the inner wrapping or my wife might send a wrong present to a wrong person in a wrong state!

She didn't want to, but she gave me a hand.

Now I'm sure that we will be sending a wrong present to a wrong person in a wrong state.

But we have plenty of time to do it!

Shop early!

Be of good cheer!

Damn the torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead!

Christmas Gifts For a Woman

We have spent a considerable amount of time surfing the web, looking at gifts, and picking out only those that we felt were truly special. Here's what we have come up with, our "Best of the Web Gifts for Women" if you will.

1) You can't go wrong by getting that special woman in your life tickets to see their favorite performer. What type of performance do they like? Are they into the ballet, or ice skating perhaps? Perhaps she would like a good belly laugh by watching her favorite comedian perform live? TicketNetwork is definitely the place to go as they have a fantastic selection of quality tickets available. Here are some of the top acts that they are currently selling tickets for:

2) Did you ever have that special piece of candy that when you eat it today, it takes you right back to your childhood? Well, want to really impress (and perhaps startle) that special lady in your life with the "I really thought about this present" statement? Why not ask her what her favorite candy was then she was growing up, then head on over to Candy.com to check out their vast selection of tasty sugary treats. They have a wide range of candy available, and even some of those "off the radar" and "hard to find" items. As an example, they sell Gold Mine Gum. We haven't seen this candy in circulation in years. This stuff sure brings back a lot of memories when we were growing up. Your lady will love you if you are able to obtain some nostalgic candy that she has been salivating over for years, but could not ever seem to find...

3) Who doesn't love chocolate? I'm sure there are a few, but I haven't met any of them. If you want the best of the best in the world of chocolate, go to zChocolate. Why do we say this? Well, for starters, zChocolate has been rated as Forbe's favorite online chocolatier since March 2005. How's that for an endorsement. In addition, their chocolates are hand-made by 4 (count them 4...not 1) award-winning French chocolatiers including Pascal Caffet, a world champion. Do you live in some far-flung area of the world? Don't worry, they ship their chocolates anywhere in the world via DHL. Yum...

4) Does that special lady on your list love a good cup of coffee? We've got just what the doctor ordered...Gevalia Coffee. Gevalia is a purveyor of fine European coffees (built upon a tradition of fine craftsmanship encompassing over 140 years). They sell more than 30 varieties of coffee and 13 varieties of tea. With such a wide selection, Gevalia can suit the various personal tastes, moods, and desires of even the world's most discriminating tea and coffee lovers. You can customize and choose which blends, roasts, or origins you want to order. Each coffee is vacuum-sealed, and packed shortly after roasting...this ensures the highest standards of quality. Why is this company on our list? The fine coffee sure, but you can get a "free" coffee maker thrown into the deal just for trying their coffee out...how's that for a bargain?

Best Selling Christmas Toys 2009

Last year the toy of the year award as voted by the Toy Retailer relationship went to the Ben 10 series. The year before it went to a set of toys from In the Night Garden. The theme seems to be a toy related to a popular children's television character and this will probably be the same pattern for the best selling toy of 2009/2010. Young children love toys that are familiar, toys that they identify with the television characters that they see. In 2008 the pre school toy of the year was again, In the Night orchad and toys such as Star Wars and toys featuring Thomas the Tank engine (pre school toys of the year in 2005) commonly win toy awards.

In 2007 Rubik cube won the award for being the best puzzle on the market. In 2008 right up until Christmas it was on the best selling toy list for Amazon. It isn't a new toy but still holds a fascination for children young and old and of course adults.

Christmas Toys

Sylvannian figures and houses won awards both in 2007 and last year. They motion to girls as cute collectible animals with a huge range of accessories. They are likely to be on the best selling Christmas 2009 list for girls, along with lego for a best selling building toy for boys.

If you stick to toys that win awards and keep an eye on internet market such as Amazon who have high volume sales for their best selling toys from September onwards, you should get a good idea of which toys are likely to highlight on the best selling toys list for 2009.

Christmas Shopping in Germany

It may be Summer now but here in the UK we're all well too aware how quickly Summer can turn into miserable Autumn weather. So what better time to plan your winter break and have something to look forward to when the rain clouds set in?

I've always been the type of person who likes seasons to be seasons. I like Summer to be hot and sunny and winter to be snowy and cold. Taking a break somewhere hot in the winter has never really appealed to me. I say, embrace the weather. So the ideal winter holiday for me? Germany, at Christmas.

Christmas Eve

If you're as much of a fan of Christmas as me you'll know there is nothing more exciting than the sight of fairy lights and the sound of festive music while you do your Christmas shopping. This is often hampered however by the sight of frenzied crowds and the sound of stressed-out shoppers. Not to mention the unhelpful shop assistants and the remarkably non-festive department stores. And that's where Germany comes in.

Germany knows how to do Christmas - and it certainly knows how to do Christmas shopping. Why get your family and friends the same old gifts from the same old stores when you can visit Germany's fantastic traditional markets. The most popular Christmas market in Germany is the Nuremberg Christkindlesmark. The market dates from 1639 and is held from the Friday before advent until Christmas Eve.

The stalls sell unique and traditional pieces so you're sure to find something special for that special someone. And while you're shopping, get into the festive spirit with a glass of mulled wine and some roasted chestnuts which are on offer at all the markets.

Plus, don't miss the opening of the market. The Lord Mayor performs the opening ceremony in the Marienplatz in Nuremberg city centre when the Christmas lights are switched on.

Paper Jamz - Innovative toy guitars, drums and amplifiers that don't seem like toys at all. Although they are made of 'paper', your children are able to play real songs on these instruments with no cords or guitar strings. That's right, no strings. The Paper Jamz guitars and other instruments control by naturally touching them. That's legitimately neat.

Zhu Zhu Pets - Furry minute stuffed hamsters that run and play on their own. The play toys and accommodations you get for them are legitimately cute and make watching these minute guys a lot of fun. They have their own bed, car, boat, hotel, ramp and lots lots more. They can have everything a hip hamster needs.

The Chatman Toy - An interactive toy companion for your kids. He plugs into a Pc using a Usb association and is able to converse back and forth with your child. Your child will have a ball hanging out with The Chatman. He surfs the internet, reads chat messages out loud and has a built-in parental control. You will appreciate being alerted if your child violates the guidelines you set up. He legitimately is a win win toy pick in terms of giving your child hours of endless fun and giving you the peace of mind of knowing that if there's a problem, the Chatman will sound the alarm.
